CASTLETON, Vt. – The Vermont State University Castleton field hockey team grabbed its first win of the season on Sunday afternoon, taking down the Terriers of Thomas College 3-1 at Dave Wolk Stadium.

How It Happened
The contest started out rather calmly, with each team recording two shots on goal and two saves. It took until the end of the first quarter for the first score of the day, owned by Thomas. The Terriers were able to make that score sheet off a penalty corner feed by Maci Freeman to Samantha Thebarge at the top of the circle to make it 1-0 in favor of the visitors.
Castleton was the dominant team in quarter two, owning the only shots and corners of the contest. It was also in the second stanza when
Ava LaRoss was able to find the back of the cage to knot the game 1-1.
Just two minutes into the second half the hosts took the lead on a
Peyton Richardson goal to make it 2-1. The Spartans remained hot, looking to score again as they took three back-to-back penalty corners, recording one shot on goal to close out the third quarter.
Castleton added an insurance goal in the 54
th minute as a
Gwyn Vincent corner insertion found Richardson at the top of the circle for her second score of the day to make it 3-1.
Despite being awarded five penalty corners in the closing minutes, the visitors were unable to beat
Zoe Martin and the defense, seeing Castleton claim it's first victory of the season, 3-1.
