Men's Soccer Clipped by Wolves in LEC Opener

CASTLETON, Vt. – The Vermont State University Castleton men's soccer team dropped a tough contest against Little East Conference opponent WestConn Saturday night, falling 2-1.

The Basics:
  • Final Score: 2-1 WestConn

How it Happened:
  • The Wolves came out hot, firing off a shot that the Spartan defense blocked before finding themselves with two corner kick opportunities, but were not able to convert on either.
  • The Spartans then took their turn down the field, with a corner kick opportunity followed by a header from Tanner Curtis that was saved, before the Wolves put one on the board in the 17th minute, taking a 1-0 lead.
  • As the second half got underway, WestConn tallied another goal, extending its lead to two in the 49th minute.
  • Curtis got another header off at the other end of the field before the Wolves took possession back and continued to pressure Xander Berthiaume and his back line with three corner kick chances.
  • In the 88th minute, a close call in the box awarded Castleton with a penalty kick opportunity, which Matt Spiller converted on, bringing the Spartans within one.
  • Both teams fought hard in the final two minutes of play, but it ultimately wasn't enough for the Spartans, leaving WestConn with the 2-1 win.
