PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Vermont State University Castleton women's soccer team opened the 2025 campaign at Plattsburgh on Friday evening, falling 2-1 off a last-minute goal by the Cardinals.

How it Happened:
- Prior to the Spartans striking first, Emma Ezzo put up a massive save in the seventh minute, with the help of Mallory McKenna, who cleared the ball out to keep play even at zero apiece.
- Maggie McKearin got the ball rolling for the Spartans, taking the ball down the field, beating her defender at the net to sneak the ball past the goalkeeper, putting Castleton up 1-0 in the ninth minute.
- The rest of the first half saw the Cardinals outshoot the Spartans 14-4, while Ezzo put up six saves to keep Castleton ahead.
- Plattsburgh was able to even up the score in the 55th minute, forcing Ezzo and her defensive line to hold the Cardinals back for the remainder of the game.
- Heartbreak struck in the 89th minute for Castleton, as Alana DeLacruz of Plattsburgh found the back of the net with seconds left to play, taking a 2-1 lead, and ultimately giving the Cardinals the win.
