Baseball Puts Away Cardinals

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Vermont State University Castleton baseball team notched a midweek non-conference win over Plattsburgh State Wednesday evening, taking the Cardinals down 10-1 behind a complete game by Luke Russell.

How it Happened
  • Sammy Steinman sent a sacrifice fly out to left field in the top of the third to bring in Tyler Dubreuil to give the Spartans a 1-0 lead.
  • Jackson Cardozo started off the top of the fifth with a double to left field to bring Jack Boyle across the plate, followed by Brandon Ramirez sending a hit out to the center fielder to put Cardozo on third. Cardozo scored on a throwing error by the shortstop to give the Spartans a 3-0 lead.
  • Castleton struck big in the top of the seventh, scoring off a single from Steinman to begin the at-bat.
  • Trey LaVigne took first base on an error by the shortstop to bring in two runs before a pitching change by the Cardinals.
  • Mikey Raby Jr. was walked on the next at-bat to load the bases with Dubreuil up next.
  • Dubreuil was walked to bring another score in, followed by Boyle sending a single through the right side to give the Spartans a 9-0 lead.
  • Castleton scored its final run following another Cardinal pitching change, with Cardozo reaching first on a fielding error, allowing Dubreuil to score to put the Spartans up 10-0 heading into the bottom of the seventh.
  • The Cardinals tacked on their only run of the game in the bottom of the ninth, with a single to right field to bring in a run, with Castleton taking the game 10-1.
 
Top Performers
Dubreuil led the Spartans with three hits and one RBI, with Boyle and Cardozo adding two hits and combing for three RBIs. Four more players had one hit each, with Steinman adding two RBIs.

Russell went the distance, throwing all nine innings for a complete game with two strikeouts, letting up only two walks.

What's Next
The Spartans will now host VTSU Lyndon tomorrow (April 10) after a location change for a non-conference 1 p.m. start.
