CASTLETON, Vt. – Earning their second win in as many days, the Vermont State University Castleton baseball program took down in-state opponent VTSU Lyndon, 15-10 Thursday afternoon, powered by two home runs from Jackson Cardozo.

How it Happened
  • The Spartans wasted no time bringing in runs, scoring 11 of their 15 in the bottom of the first inning after sending the Hornets out in a row to start the top of the inning. 
  • On his first at-bat of the inning, Cardozo sent a double to left center field, bringing Joe Castellano across home plate.
  • Two batters later, Justin Strozyk singled to left field to load the bases and bring Cardozo home to start five consecutive at-bats of scoring.
  • Tommie Shaw sent a single through the left side, bringing one run in, followed by Trey LaVigne reaching first on an error while another run came in.
  • Mikey Raby Jr. doubled to right center field, bringing two runs home, with Castellano following and reaching first on an error, allowing Trey LaVigne to score, putting the Spartans up 8-0.
  • Following a pitching change by the Hornets, Mason Meinke sent a double out to right center, bringing one run across the plate.
  • Cardozo came up for his second at-bat of the inning, sending a two-run home run out of the park to give Castleton an 11-0 lead at the conclusion of the first inning.
  • The Hornets tacked on five runs in the top of the second, reaching first on an error followed by a walk, and a single to load the bases.
  • With a runner scoring on a passed ball, the next batter up sent out a two-run home run to cut the Spartan lead to 6.
  • Lyndon notched four more runs in the seventh inning to cut the lead to two with The Spartans due up at the bottom of the inning.
  • Dylan Hedler pinch ran for LaVigne, advancing to second on a wild pitch, eventually stealing home while Raby was caught stealing second.
  • Cardozo stepped up to the plate with two runners on, launching his second home run of the day, scoring three runs, to give Castleton a 15-9 lead.
  • The Hornets notched their final run off a double in the top of the ninth, but couldn't find more to battle back.
Top Performers
Cardozo led the Spartans with three hits, two home runs, and six RBIs, followed by Raby with three hits and two RBIs. Meinke and Strozyk combined for four hits and two RBIs.

Wilson earned the start, going three innings with one strikeout with Kevin Hewlett relieving him, throwing two innings with one strikeout, earning the win. Garrett Siegel made his Castleton debut, throwing one inning, facing six batters.

Carter Chapman added one strikeout, pitching two-thirds of an inning, with Patrick Hallett earning three strikeouts in one and one-third innings. Nicholas Griffin closed out the final inning for the Spartans.

What's Next
Castleton packs up tonight and heads to UMass Dartmouth tomorrow (April 11) for a Little East Conference double-header, with the first pitch set for 12 p.m.
