CASTLETON, Vt. – The Vermont State University Castleton softball team hosted its annual Strikeout Cancer games against Plymouth State University, promoting awareness and supporting those who have been affected by cancer.

How It Happened:
- Gould started off hot striking out the first two batters she faced. She led off for the Spartans with a single up the middle.
- Alexis Rogers and Taylor Russell each got on base on them at bats to load the bases in the top of the first.
- Samera Rideout would be hit by a pitch to advance all runners and give Castleton the first run of the game.
- Masson Billert smacked a single to center field to collect two RBIs and make it 3-0.
- Plymouth Kenzie Bessette put in work for the Panthers with a single from a bunt. Following up with a stolen base and reaching home on Plymouth's next at bat to make it a 3-1 game.
- The two sides battled the rest of the way, but it would be Castleton coming out on top behind Gould's six strikeouts and strong defensive plays from the Spartans' fielding. Giving them the victory in game one 3-1.

How It Happened:
- McMahon made her first colligate start on the mound. She struck out her first batter and kept the Panthers hitless in the first inning.
- Russell and Rogers found themselves in scoring position in the bottom of the first inning, but were unable to make it home.
- Despite a majority of the game being a defensive showdown, Castleton tallied 10 hits to Plymouth's five. Russell provided a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate.
- Plymouth's Mia Ly opened the scoring in the fourth inning with a single home run to left field to make it a 1-0 game.
- Mikayla Walsh made on base with a single up the middle and was able to make her way around the bases and make it to home plate with Rogers hitting a double to left field to tie the game back up at one.
- The Panthers responded with two runs in the top of the sixth, giving them a 4-1 lead over Castleton.
- In the final inning, Rogers hit a triple and proceeded to score with Russell hitting a RBI single to bring Castleton back within two.
- Rideout knocked a single down the left field line, giving Castleton all the momentum with two runners on base and one out.
- On Castleton's next at bat, the Panthers were able to tag out Rideout and Billert on a chaotic play around the bases. Holding off the Spartans' rally and splitting the series with a 4-2 victory.

VTSU Castleton travels to Rhode Island College on Saturday, May 3 to fight for a playoff spot and wrap up the regular season. First pitch takes place at 1 p.m.
