KEENE, N.H. – The Vermont State University Castleton baseball team dropped its mid-week match against the Owls of Keene State, 9-4 in Little East Conference play.

How it Happened
- Castleton struck first as the game opened, with Jackson Cardozo sending a single to right center field, sending Jack Boyle to third and Tyler Dubreuil across the plate.
- On the next at-bat, Cardozo was picked off at first, and Boyle was able to cross the plate on a wild pitch, giving the Spartans a 2-0 lead.
- The Owls fired back in the bottom half of the inning, tying the game with a double and then taking a two-run lead with a single and double as the inning came to a close.
- Both pitchers and their defenses were able to shut down the bats in the second and third innings before Keene tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the fourth, taking a 6-2 lead.
- The Spartans struggled at the plate, unable to cut down on Keene's lead, before the Owls tacked on two more runs, extending their lead to six with three more innings left of play.
- In the top of the eighth, with two runners on, Cardozo sent a single through the right side allowing Robbie Briggs to score, and on the following at-bat, Justin Strozyk sent a single to right field, allowing Boyle to cross the plate, bringing the score to 8-4.
- The Owls earned the final run of the game in the bottom half of the eighth inning, solidifying their win.
Top Performers
Cardozo led the Spartans with three hits and two RBIs, with Strozyk and
Tommie Shaw adding one hit each.
Ethan Nichols earned the start on the mound, going three and two-thirds innings with four strikeouts.
Patrick Hallett,
Michael Malloy, and
Luke Russell finished out the final four and one-third innings, combining for three strikeouts.
