Baseball Stumbles Against Huskies on Senior Day

CASTLETON, Vt. – Jackson Cardozo's trio of home runs were not enough as the Vermont State University Castleton baseball team fell to Little East Conference opponent Southern Maine in both games of Monday's double-header, 10-6 and 10-7.

Seniors
Before Monday's contests, the baseball team honored its 15 seniors who have dedicated their time and efforts to the program. Michael Lodge, Stephen Coffey, Tyler McLain, Brendan Shader, Jack Boyle, Nicholas Griffin, Brandon Ramirez, Dillon Pallotto, Trey LaVigne, Sean Butkowski, Dylan Hedler, Michael Malloy, Cardozo, Adam Winchell, and Sammy Steinman. All 15 have made a great impact on the Spartans baseball team throughout their time.

Game 1:
The Basics
  • Final Score: 10-6 Southern Maine
  • Location: Castleton, Vt. – Spartan Baseball Field
  • Records: 15-17 Southern Maine | 12-21 Castleton
How it Happened
  • The Huskies opened the day earning two walks, before Peter Keblinsky notched a single up the middle, bringing one run across the plate in the first, and another in the second to take a 2-0 lead.
  • As the Spartans took to the plate in the bottom of the second, Tyler Dubreuil stepped up with the bases loaded and grounded out to the second baseman, allowing LaVigne to come in.
  • Southern Maine struck again at the top of the third, but Cardozo answered at the bottom of the inning, with his first home run of the day, cutting the lead to one.
  • As the fourth inning began, the Spartans quickly put away two outs before the Huskies went on a tear, scoring four runs before changing sides.
  • Mikey Raby Jr. sent a single up the middle, advancing to second on the play, with Boyle stepping up to bat. He launched a quick double, allowing Raby to cross the plate.
  • With the Huskies up 7-3, Castleton needed to step up. Dubreuil stepped up once again with bases loaded, reaching on a fielder's choice, bringing in Shader.
  • Dubreuil stole second, and Tommie Shaw stole home on the next at-bat, lessening the lead to two.
  • Southern Maine shut down the Spartans for the sixth inning, tacking on three runs of their own in the process.
  • Boyle got Castleton back on the board, sending a single through the right side in the bottom of the seventh, bringing Raby across home plate.
  • Both teams retired the sides in the eighth and ninth innings, giving the Huskies a 10-6 win.
Top Performers
Boyle and Shaw led Castleton with three hits apiece, while Cardozo added two hits and an RBI.

Winchell threw four innings, with two strikeouts. Malloy came on in relief for two and two-thirds innings, with Alex Bingham closing out the final two and one-third innings with one strikeout.

Game 2:
The Basics
  • Final Score: 10-7 Southern Maine
  • Location: Castleton, Vt. – Spartan Baseball Field
  • Records: 16-17 Southern Maine | 12-22 Castleton
How it Happened
  • The Spartans took their only lead of the day in the bottom half of the second inning, with Shaw sending a single up the middle to bring Ramirez in.
  • The Huskies answered right back in the top of the third to tie the game at one apiece.
  • Cardozo didn't let Southern Maine affect him, launching his second home run of the day, this time a three-run home run, giving the Spartans a 4-1 lead.
  • Hunter Brisette of the Huskies immediately responded at the top of the next inning with his own three-run home run to tie the game once again.
  • Southern Maine further extended their lead in the fifth, taking a 7-4 lead with another home run.
  • After a quiet sixth inning, the Huskies homered again, to extend their lead to four with time dwindling for the Spartans to change the outcome of game two.
  • With Hedler pinch-running for Justin Strozyk, Ramirez was up to the plate. During the at-bat, Hedler stole second, and on Ramirez's single he made the race for home plate, cutting the lead to three with one inning left to go.
  • The Huskies tacked on two more runs in the top of the ninth as Nick Lescarbeau worked to retire the side with his defense behind him.
  • The Spartans readied for their final chance to bat, with Raby earning a walk before two straight fly-outs.
  • Cardozo stepped up to the plate once again, launching his third home run of the day to cut the lead to three, but it was not enough as the Huskies took game two 10-7.
Top Performers
Cardozo, Ramirez, and Shaw led the Spartans with two hits each, with Cardozo adding a team-high five RBIs.

Sam Crawford earned the nod on the mound, going four innings with four strikeouts before Owen Phelps came on in relief for four innings. Lescarbeau closed out the final inning with one strikeout.

What's Next
The squad heads across the border to Keene, N.H. tomorrow (April 29) for an LEC match with Keene State set for 3 p.m.
