CASTLETON, Vt. – The Vermont State University Castleton baseball team hosted in-state rival Norwich on a rainy Thursday afternoon, winning 6-4 in five innings due to the weather and field conditions.
The Basics:
- Final Score: 6-4 Castleton
- Location: Castleton, Vt. – Spartan Baseball Field
- Records: 12-20 Castleton | 11-19 Norwich
How it Happened:
- Both teams had a quiet start to the game, with the Spartans putting down the first three batters for the Cadets in order, and the Cadets taking four batters to put away Castleton.
- The Spartans were on the board first. With one runner on, Tommie Shaw stepped up to the plate, sending a double to left field, bringing Brendan Shader home, giving Castleton a 1-0 lead after the second.
- After taking care of the Cadets in the top of the third inning, with Tyler Dubreuil in scoring position, Jackson Cardozo set a sacrifice fly out to the center fielder, allowing Dubreuil to come home to extend the lead to 2-0.
- The fifth inning saw action from both sides, with the Cadets striking at the top of the inning, with two runners in scoring position as the next batter sent a three-run home run out of the park, giving Norwich the lead.
- Tacking on one more run as the inning came to a close, the Cadets led 4-2 as the rain continued on and off.
- Cardozo started the Spartans off with a single to center field at the bottom of the inning, followed by Mason Meinke launching a double to center field, bringing Cardozo home.
- Meinke then stole third while Brandon Ramirez was up to bat. Ramirez grounded out to the second baseman, allowing Meinke to score, tying the game at four each.
- Shader was walked on the next at-bat, and Shaw reached first on an error, putting the winning in scoring position. Trey LaVigne sent a single through the right side to bring Shader home, with Shaw advancing to third.
- After a pitching change, Mikey Raby Jr. sent a double to right field, bringing Shaw home before the final out of the inning.
