Baseball Overcome by Red Dragons

ONEONTA, N.Y. – The Vermont State University Castleton baseball team was overpowered by non-conference opponent Oneonta, falling 18-9 in mid-week action.

The Basics:

How it Happened:
  • After a quick start to the first inning, the Red Dragons jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom half of the inning, before the Spartans found one run off a single from Brendan Shader, bringing Turner Clews across the plate.
  • Oneonta didn't let the Spartans momentum last long, with a double to right center field bringing in two more runs for the Red Dragons, extending their lead to 4-1.
  • Castleton started the third inning with a bang as Jack Boyle launched his third home run of the season.
  • With two runners on, Brandon Ramirez reached first on a fielder's choice, allowing Jackson Cardozo to cross the plate, getting the Spartans within one. The Castleton defense shut down the Red Dragons in the bottom of the third to bring the Spartans back up to the plate.
  • Boyle sent a double to center field, with Cardozo up next. He sent a single to left field, bringing Boyle home to tie the game at four each.
  • In the bottom half of the fourth, Oneonta scored six runs, to take a 10-4 lead.
  • With two runners on base, Tommie Shaw sent a single back to the pitcher, with Ramirez advancing to second, and Justin Strozyk crossed home plate, cutting the Red Dragons lead to five.
  • Castleton's defense once again worked to keep Oneonta at bay, leaving two runners stranded on base at the turn of the inning.
  • With one hit and one runner left on base at the top of the sixth inning, it was back to the Spartan defense and pitchers to limit the runs for the Red Dragons. Oneonta scored two more runs in the bottom of the inning before Castleton could retire the side.
  • With two outs and a double to start the seventh inning, the Spartans gained some momentum back.
  • Ramirez scored on a passed ball before Clews was hit by a pitch to put one runner on.
  • Shader stepped up to the plate, launching Castleton's second home run of the game, and his first career home run, bringing the Spartans within four before changing sides.
  • Castleton retired the Red Dragons in four batters, working to limit further scoring.
  • The Red Dragons tacked on six more runs in the bottom of the eighth, extending their lead to 10.
  • The Spartans found one more run before the game came to a close. With two runners on, Boyle sent a single to right field, bringing in Shaw, and giving Castleton nine runs on the day.
Top Performers:
Cardozo led the Spartans with four hits and one RBI, while Boyle had three hits and two RBIs. Three more Spartans combined for six hits and five runs.

Six pitchers combined for seven walked batters, with Stephen Coffey throwing the most pitches for Castleton, seeing three and a third innings.

What's Next:
Castleton returns home after a two-day trip to New York, hosting the Cadets of Norwich tomorrow (April 24) at 4 p.m.
