CANTON, N.Y. – The Vermont State University Castleton baseball team traveled across the border to Canton, N.Y. for a mid-week non-conference match-up with the Saints of St. Lawrence, falling 3-1.

How it Happened
- In a low-scoring affair, the Saints struck first in the bottom of the second, with one runner on and a single to center field to bring the runner home, followed by a runner scoring on an error, to give them a 2-0 lead.
- The next inning saw strong defense from both sides, with Luke Russell throwing two strikeouts for the Spartans to retire the side.
- In the top of the fourth, Jackson Cardozo reached first on an error, eventually reaching second on the same play, to put a runner in scoring position for Castleton.
- Mason Meinke followed suit with a ground out to the second baseman, allowing Cardozo to advance to third.
- On the next at-bat, Justin Strozyk launched a single to left field, bringing Cardozo home and cutting the Saints lead to one.
- Both teams continued to have clutch defensive plays, with pitchers on both sides putting batters away to keep the score at 2-1 Saints, until the bottom of the eighth.
- With the bases loaded, St. Lawrence sent a single to left center field, bringing the runner on third home, to take a 3-1 lead. They were able to retire the Spartans in order at the top of the ninth to take the win.
Top Performers
Strozyk,
Tommie Shaw, and
Jared Maher each had one hit, with Strozyk notching the only RBI of the day for Castleton.
Russell put away four batters, allowing three hits and two runs through three innings, with
Adam Winchell relieving him for the fourth inning with a strikeout and a walk.
Nicholas Griffin,
Michael Malloy, and
Nick Lescarbeau saw action through the final four innings of play.
