DANBURY, Conn. – The rookie class turned heads today as the Vermont State University Castleton baseball team split on the road against Little East Conference opponent Western Connecticut on Saturday.
Game 1:
The Basics:
- Final Score: 13-11 Castleton
- Location: Danbury, Conn. – Westside Baseball Field
- Records: 11-17 (4-6, LEC) Castleton | 7-16 (0-8, LEC) WestConn
How it Happened:
- Jackson Cardozo got things going for the Spartans, with Jack Boyle on first, launching a double to bring in Boyle, giving the Spartans a 1-0 at the turn of the first inning.
- The Wolves started their at-bat with two singles, followed by a passed ball allowing the two runners to advance one base. The next batter was walked before the fourth batter of the inning sent a single out to bring the runners on second and third home.
- With errors plaguing the Spartans after the fifth batter of the inning was hit by a pitch, the Wolves tacked on four more runs to close out the inning, taking a 6-1 lead.
- Both defenses were on point in the second inning, allowing no runs, hits, or errors.
- Mikey Raby Jr. started the third inning with a double, with Tyler Dubreuil getting hit by a pitch on the next at-bat.
- Boyle's flyout allowed both runners to advance to scoring position, before Strozyk sent out a double to bring both in, cutting the WestConn lead to three.
- Sam Crawford with the help of the Castleton defense, put the Wolves three batters out in order to end the third.
- Dubreuil and Raby went to work in the top of the fourth, with Raby earning a walk, and Dubreuil singling, allowing Raby to take second and eventually steal third on an error.
- Dubreuil stole second with Boyle up to bat, who sent a ground out to the second baseman bringing Raby across the plate, cutting the lead to two.
- At the bottom of the fifth, the Wolves pulled ahead by four, following a Spartan error.
- Castleton notched their fifth run of the day, off a sacrifice fly from Dubreuil, bringing Turner Clews home.
- The Wolves continued to trade runs with the Spartans, scoring once in the sixth.
- Cardozo opened the top of the seventh with his fifth home run of the season, to cut the lead to three.
- With one on, Tommie Shaw sent out a double, bringing Joe Castellano in, followed by the same play happening on the next at-bat, cutting the lead to one.
- WestConn pulled ahead for the final time in the bottom of the seventh, scoring two more runs, making it an 11-8 game.
- The Spartans turned up the heat in the eighth inning, challenging the Wolves.
- Dubreuil started the inning off with a single, with Boyle notching a single right behind him, putting two runners on.
- Cardozo stepped up to the plate, reaching first on an error, with Dubreuil coming home in the process.
- Justin Strozyk, the rookie, stepped up with two runners on, launching his first collegiate career home run, putting the Spartans one run ahead of the Wolves.
- Raby notched a single as the inning came to a close, bringing the final run of the game across the plate, giving the Spartans the 13-11 win, with stellar defense finishing out the game.
Top Performers
Mason Meinke led the Spartans with three hits, with six Spartans having two hits each. Strozyk led the team in RBIs with five on the day, and his first career home run.
Sam Crawford took the mound to open the game, going four and two-thirds innings with three strikeouts, and three walks.
Michael Malloy threw for one and one third-innings, with one walk.
Owen Phelps earned the win, going two innings, and
Ethan Nichols earned the save with one walk and one strikeout in one inning.
Game 2:
The Basics
- Final Score: 20-14 WestConn
- Location: Danbury, Conn. – Westside Baseball Field
- Records: 8-16 (1-8, LEC) WestConn | 11-18 (4-7, LEC) Castleton
How it Happened:
- Game two began the same way, with Castleton going up 1-0 after Boyle stole home and Cardozo stole second.
- The Wolves notched two runs in the bottom of the first to take the lead.
- The Spartans were held scoreless by the Wolves pitching and defense in the top of the second, with the Wolves scoring four runs in the bottom half of the inning, to extend their lead to 6-1.
- The bats were hot for Castleton in the third, starting with a single from Meinke before he would eventually steal home.
- Brandon Ramirez set a sacrifice fly out to center field, bringing in another Spartan run.
- Following a pitching change, with bases loaded, Raby singled to bring Strozyk home.
- On the next at-bat, Dubreuil singled to bring in Trey LaVigne, loading the bases once again.
- Meinke stepped up to the plate, launching his first career home run, and first career grand slam, giving the Spartans a 9-6 advantage over the Wolves as it was their turn to bat.
- The Wolves closed out the third inning with four runs to take the lead back, before a fourth inning with both sides retiring in three batters.
- Castleton tied the game at 10 each in the top of the fifth, with Meinke notching a single to bring in Raby.
- WestConn reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the inning, scoring four more runs, bringing the game to 14-10.
- With two walks before a pitching change in the top of the sixth, the Spartan's last three batters of the inning flew out and struck out to change the side.
- The Wolves scored one more run off a double, to extend their lead to five.
- With the bases loaded in the top of the seventh, Shaw earned a walk to bring one run home, and LaVigne singled on the next at-bat after a Wolves pitching change, bringing in the second run of the inning, cutting the lead to three.
- The Wolves then took advantage of an error, bringing two runs in, with another run coming in from a single before the Spartans defense and Malloy shut down the runners on base and a batter.
- Menike struck again, sending out a double to bring home Dubreuil, putting Castleton down five.
- The Wolves continued to connect the bat to the ball, scoring two more runs in the bottom of the eighth, leaving Castleton three more outs to change the outcome of game two.
- Christian Giannone earned a walk, as Ramirez scored on a wild pitch in the top of the ninth, but it was not enough to get the Spartans closer to the Wolves.
Top Performers:
Meinke led Castleton with four hits and a career-high six RBIs, followed by Dubreuil with three hits and one RBI.
Alex Bingham earned the nod for the Spartans, going two innings with one strikeout. Six more Spartan pitchers combined for seven strikeouts, with a game-high four from
Nick Lescarbeau.
