Baseball Scores 15 Unanswered Runs to Move Past Williams

CASTLETON, Vt. – The Vermont State University Castleton baseball team got back in the win column Wednesday evening, scoring 15 unanswered runs to take down Williams College, 19-4.

The Basics:

How it Happened
  • The Ephs opened the game, scoring two runs in the top of the first inning, taking a 2-0 lead.
  • The Spartans did not let the lead last long, with Jack Boyle sending a double to right field to bring in Tyler Dubreuil to get the scoring started for the Spartans.
  • Mason Meinke notched a single up the middle, bringing Boyle home, with Joe Castellano, Tommie Shaw, and Turner Clews being walked on the next three at-bats, bringing two runs in, and taking a 4-2 lead.
  • The Ephs scored their last two runs of the game off a two-run home run in the top of the second, with the Spartan defense putting away three of the next four batters.
  • Castleton notched two more runs in the bottom of the fourth, with Jackson Cardozo launching a triple to center field to bring Dubreuil and Mikey Raby Jr. home, followed by a sacrifice fly from Justin Strozyk, bringing in Cardozo, giving the Spartans a 7-4 lead.
  • In the bottom of the fifth inning, with the bases loaded, Boyle was walked, bringing home one run.
  • Two batters later, Strozyk sent a single up the middle, bringing the runners from second and third in to take a 10-4 lead.
  • The Spartans struck again in the bottom of the seventh, when Meinke stepped up to the plate, grounding out to the second baseman with bases loaded to bring Dubreuil home.
  • Castellano notched a single up the middle on the following at-bat as Cardozo and Boyle turned on the jets to cross home plate.
  • The final run of the inning for Castleton came from a Clews double to left center field, bringing in Castellano and putting the Spartans up 10.
  • Taking advantage of a pitching change, the Spartan batters went to work in the bottom of the eighth inning.
  • With Dubreuil earning a walk on the first at-bat, Boyle sent a double to left field, while Dubreuil ran home. Boyle advanced to third on the throw-in, with Cardozo up next.
  • Cardozo reached first on an error, allowing Boyle to come home. The next three batters were walked, with the third bringing in Cardozo.
  • Shaw sent a sacrifice fly to the center fielder, bringing in one run, with Clews reaching on a fielder's choice on the next at-bat to bring Meinke home for the Spartan's final run of the game.
Top Performers
Castellano led the Spartans with three hits and three RBIs, while Boyle and Clews had two hits and three RBIs each. Five more Spartans combined for five hits and eight RBIs.

Stephen Coffey earned the start on the mound for the Spartans, seeing through five innings with one strikeout and four walks. Adam Winchell threw two innings on the mound, with two strikeouts and two walks, with Ethan Nichols closing out the final two innings with three strikeouts.

What's Next
The Spartans head down to Western Connecticut State on Saturday, April 19 for a Little East Conference double-header, with the first pitch set for 12 p.m.
