Softball Clashes With Beacons in Doubleheader

BOSTON, Mass. – The Vermont State University Castleton softball team traveled to Boston, Mass. where they split a pair of games against UMass Boston in Little East Conference action.

How it Happened:
  • The Beacons loaded the bases in the bottom of the fourth. Haley Tilberry hit a single RBI up the middle to bring home the first runner of the game and give UMB a 1-0 lead.
  • UMB extended their lead after an error by the Spartans fielding allowed for Melchionda reach third base. She was then brought home on the Beacons' next at bat to make it 2-0.
  • Castleton responded in the top of the sixth inning, with Alexis Rogers knocking a double to left center. Castleton's next two batters were walked to load the bases for the Spartans.
  • Makayla Walsh was able to bring home two runners on her at bat to tie the game at two late in the contest.
  • Castleton collected two flyouts and Gould punched out the last Beacon batter in the bottom of the sixth to bring it to the final inning at 2-2.
  • Vinna Jensen led off the top of the seventh with a single and an advancement to second on a throwing error by UMB. Jess Henrichs entered as a pinch runner for Castleton on second base.
  • Gould reached first on another error by the Beacons to put runners on the corners for Castleton.
  • Rogers sent a ball to the right field where she would be thrown out at first, but allowed for Heinrichs to cross home plate and take the lead at 3-2.
  • Taylor Russell put Gould in a scoring position at third base with a single up the middle.
  • Samara Raiche entered the game as a pinch hitter, making her collegiate debut. She hit a sacrifice flyout to left field, allowing for Gould to dash home and give Castleton a 4-2 lead.     
  • With three outs to go, Gould struck out UMB's first batter. The Spartans fielding finished the job with a groundout and a pop up to secure the victory over the Beacons in game one.

How it Happened:
  • The Spartans carried their momentum over from game one with an early bases loaded in the top of the first. Samera Rideout's discipline at the plate resulted in a walk and gave Castleton a 1-0 lead.
  • Walsh collected an RBI from her groundout to extend Castleton's lead to two.
  •  The Beacons were able to gain some momentum of their own and collected three hits and four runs in the bottom of the second to take a 4-2 lead.
  • Boston ignited their bats and were able to find six more runs throughout the contest, ending the game in five innings with a score of 10-2 and splitting the series with the Spartans.

VTSU Castleton prepares for a LEC doubleheader contest against Keene St. on Saturday, April 19 at Spartan Softball Field. Game one takes place 1 p.m.
