CASTLETON, Vt. – The Vermont State University Castleton baseball team dropped its mid-week match against Little East Conference opponent Keene State, falling 18-1 in seven innings.

The Basics:

How it Happened:
  • The Owls exploded in the first inning, scoring four runs before the Spartans made a pitching change, then tacking on six more to take a 10-0 lead.
  • Castleton's only run came in the bottom of the second.
  • Trey LaVigne led off the inning with a walk, followed by two strikeouts from the next two batters. Brendan Shader reached first on an error by the shortstop on his at-bat, with LaVigne advancing to second.
  • Tommie Shaw was up next, being hit by the pitch to load the bases.
  • With Mikey Raby Jr. up to bat, all three runners on base took advantage of a passed ball, with LaVigne coming home to give the Spartans their only run of the day.
  • The Owls scored two more runs in the top of the third, stranding the Spartans in scoring position in the bottom half of the inning.
  • Keene tacked on their final six runs in the top of the fifth, taking an 18-1 lead.
  • Keaton Nann and the Spartan defense shut down the Owls in the top of the sixth before going down in order to end the inning.
  • Castleton came up at the bottom of the seventh, with one-half inning left to continue the game.
  • With the first two batters out, Raby was walked. Tyler Dubreuil stepped up to the plate, and Raby stole second to put a runner in scoring position, but Dubreuil grounded out to end the game.
Top Performers:
Nick Lescarbeau, Michael Malloy, and Kevin Hewlett notched one strikeout each, walking a combined four batters.

The Spartans host Williams College tomorrow (April 16) for the second game of their back-to-back days at home, first pitch is set for 4 p.m.
