CASTLETON, Vt. – The Vermont State University Castleton softball program split their series against Little East Conference opponent Southern Maine on Sunday.

How it Happened:
- Madison Gould opened the first inning with a strikeout, followed by Kayleigh Osterhaudt catching a pop up. With Gould notching another strikeout, putting the Huskies down in order to begin game one.
- In the bottom of the first inning after Taylor Russell was hit by a pitch, junior Samara Rideout stepped up to the plate.
- Rideout launched a massive two-run home run to give the Spartans a 2-0 lead, and the only runs of the game. Her first homer of the season.
- The Huskies found a runner in scoring position in the top of the third, with the next batter flying out to close out the side. Southern Maine was able to put away the Spartans in the bottom half of the inning, to keep the game at a 2-0 advantage to Castleton.
- After a scoreless fourth inning, the Huskies took advantage of a Castleton error with a runner advancing to second.
- On the next at-bat with a groundout to Gould and two runners on, the Huskies took their chance at scoring, sending the runner on second home. Makayla Walsh notched the tag while the runner on second stole third. Russell notched the final out of the inning, leaving the Huskies stranded.
- Gould and the Castleton fielders locked in for the final two Southern Maine at-bats to hang on for the 2-0 victory.

How it Happened:
- After not seeing a run on the board in game one, the Huskies scored in the top of the first inning with a double from Kendall Migliorin to make it a 1-0 game.
- The two sides battled back and forth in each inning, giving very little to work with. Brouillette tallied at least one strikeout in the first three innings of action.
- Southern Maine loaded the bases in the top of the fourth with two outs. After an error from the Spartans, the Huskies saw two runners reach home plate to extend their lead to 3-0.
- The Huskies scored two more runs in the fifth inning to give them a 5-0 lead over the Spartans.
- Dana Elkins took to the mound for the Castleton in the bottom of the fifth inning to help put away Southern Maine's last at bat.
- Castleton made substantial efforts to rally back, but USM's Mia Coots would shut out the Spartans with 10 strikeouts, including two in the final inning to give the Huskies the victory in game two.

VTSU Castleton travels to Boston, Mass., on Tuesday, April 13, for doubleheader action against LEC opponent UMass Boston.
