Baseball Comes up Short Against Corsairs

DARTMOUTH, Mass. – The Vermont State University Castleton baseball team came up short against the Corsairs of UMass Dartmouth in both games of Friday's Little East Conference double-header.

Game 1:
The Basics
  • Final Score: 9-6 UMD
  • Location: Dartmouth, Mass. – Corsairs Field
  • Records: UMD 12-10 | Castleton 9-15
How it Happened
  • The Corsairs jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, with a double sent to right center field, bringing three runs home, followed by a ground out to third base to bring in one more run.
  • Castleton shot an answer back in the top half of the second inning, with Turner Clews grounding out to short to bring Brendan Shader home.
  • After Mikey Raby Jr. reached first on an error and Tommie Shaw advanced to third, Tyler Dubreuil grounded out to short, advancing Raby, bringing Shaw across home plate, cutting the Corsairs lead to two.
  • UMass Dartmouth earned their fifth run in the bottom half of the inning, with a single, and three batters later brought in two more runs on a fielder's choice, extending the lead to 7-2.
  • The Corsairs were able to tack on another run in the bottom of the third before the Spartans could respond in the top of the fourth.
  • With the bases loaded, Jack Boyle notched a single to left center field, bringing Raby and Shaw home.
  • On the next at-bat, Jackson Cardozo grounded into a double play, bringing Dubreuil home in the process, cutting the Corsairs lead to three.
  • In the next two innings, both teams went down in order, and could not get anything going in the bottom half of the sixth and top half of the seventh.
  • In the bottom of the seventh, the Corsairs scored their final run of the game off a single to center field, giving them nine runs.
  • The Spartans took advantage of two hit batters, and a fielder's choice, bringing Raby up to bat. He sent a single to the shortstop, bringing Shaw across the plate for the final run of the game.
Top Performers
Cardozo and Shaw led Castleton with two hits each, with five Spartans combining for five hits and four RBIs.

Sam Crawford earned the start on the mound, going five innings, with five strikeouts, and Owen Phelps closed out the final three innings, walking only one batter and giving up one run.

The Basics
  • Final Score: 11-3 UMD
  • Location: Dartmouth, Mass. – Corsairs Field
  • Records: UMD 13-10 | Castleton 9-16
How it Happened
  • The Corsairs struck first once again in the bottom of the first inning, with an error off a double and a ground out. They were able to tack on two more runs in the bottom of the second inning off a single to right field to take a 4-0 lead.
  • Trey LaVigne shot back with a two-run home run launched to right field to cut the UMass Dartmouth lead down to two.
  • UMass Dartmouth found a groove in the bottom of the sixth inning, scoring two runs from a single, one run off a sacrifice fly, a single to third base, and a single to left field, giving them a 9-2 lead.
  • The Corsairs, further extending their lead, scored their 10th run in the bottom of the seventh off a wild pitch.
  • Scoring their final run of the game in the bottom of the eighth, the Corsairs grounded into a double play, with one run scoring, taking an 11-2 lead.
  • Castleton notched their final run of the day in the top of the ninth inning, with Raby grounding out to second, bringing Evan Primeau home before a strikeout and groundout ended the game.
Top Performers
Boyle and LaVigne led the Spartans in game two, with three hits apiece, with LaVigne tacking on two RBIs.

Alex Bingham threw five and two-thirds innings for the Spartans with one strikeout and two walks, with Keaton Nann relieving him for one and one-third innings, allowing no walks. Adam Winchell made an appearance for the final innings, with one strikeout and two walks.

What's Next
Castleton is set to host the Owls of Keene State on Tuesday, April 15 in an LEC matchup, with the first pitch set for 3:30 p.m.
