Baseball Splits at Eastern Connecticut

WILLIMANTIC, Conn. – The Vermont State University Castleton baseball team split Friday's thrilling double-header, played at Easter Connecticut. The Spartans hit as the home team due to field conditions at the home field moving the location. The Warriors took game one 5-4 in 12 innings, with the Spartans holding it down to take game two 5-4.

Game 1:
The Basics

How it Happened
  • The Warriors struck at the top of the fourth inning, with a single to the right field to bring one across.
  • Castleton answered in the bottom of the inning, with Sammy Steinman swinging a single to bring Tyler Dubreuil home to tie the game at one apiece.
  • Neither team could find scoring until the eighth inning when Easter Connecticut shot a single to bring in one run, followed by a walk with bases loaded to take a 3-1 lead.
  • Jackson Cardozo sent his first home run of the season out of the park in the bottom of the inning to bring the Spartans within one.
  • In the top of the ninth, the Warriors singled to right field, bringing in another run to extend their lead to two.
  • The Spartans fought back in the bottom of the inning, with Dubreuil reaching first on an error, with two Castleton runs scoring in the process to tie the game at four, to force extra innings.
  • Eastern Connecticut sent a double into play, bringing the winning run across the plate in the top of the 12th inning, with the Spartans unable to find any more runs.
Top Performers
Brandon Ramirez and Mikey Raby Jr. led Castleton with two hits apiece, with five Spartans adding one each. Dubreuil, Cardozo, and Steinman each had one RBI, with Cardozo notching the game's lone home run.

Sam Crawford earned the start on the mound, going seven and two-thirds innings, tying his career-high with eight strikeouts. Michael Malloy finished the final four and one-third innings, adding one strikeout.

How it Happened
  • The Warriors were on the board first, with a ground out to short, bringing a runner across the plate to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the third.
  • The Spartans didn't let that stop an explosive bottom of the third, scoring all five of their runs.
  • Cardozo started Castleton's scoring off, sending a single to right field to bring Dubreuil home.
  • Ramirez followed up with a single to left field to bring home Steinman.
  • Brendan Shader sent a single to left field with bases loaded to bring in Cardozo, taking a 3-1 lead.
  • On the next at-bat, Tommie Shaw sent a sacrifice fly out to right field, bringing Jack Boyle across the plate.
  • With two outs, Dubreuil stepped up, and earned a walk with bases loaded to bring in Ramirez, to give the Spartans a 5-1 lead.
  • Eastern Connecticut found a run in the next inning, sending a sacrifice fly out to center field.
  • In the top of the sixth, the Warriors sent a single to center field, sending a runner home to cut Castleton's lead to two.
  • The Warriors scored their final run in the top of the seventh off of another sacrifice fly, to bring the game to 5-4 Castleton.
  • Nick Lescarbeau made an appearance on the mound to close the game out for Castleton in the top of the eighth, notching a pair of strikeouts and the save to help solidify the Spartan's first win over Eastern Connecticut in six years.
Top Performers
Dubreuil and Shader led the Spartans offense in game two with two hits and one RBI each. Five more Spartans posted one hit apiece, with three of them adding one RBI each.

Alex Bingham notched the start on the mound, throwing for six innings with one strikeout. Owen Phelps relieved him in the seventh inning, and Lescarbeau earned the save in the final two innings with two strikeouts.

What's Next
The Spartans are set to head to Skidmore on Wednesday, April 2 for a non-conference match-up, with the first pitch set for 3:30 p.m.
