SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Vermont State University Castleton baseball team fought back and forth with the Thoroughbreds of Skidmore on a cold Wednesday, pulling away with the 14-10 victory.

How it Happened
- The Thoroughbreds slung a two-run home run out to left field to start the bottom of the first inning, to take a 2-0 lead.
- Jack Boyle earned a walk in the top of the third with bases loaded to bring one run in, followed by Jackson Cardozo sending a sacrifice fly out to center field to bring in another run, tying the game at two.
- Skidmore answered with a double, bringing in another run to take a 3-2 lead.
- The bats started to get hot for the Spartans in the top of the fourth, with Trey LaVigne sending a single through the right side, bringing in the tying run.
- Boyle took second base off a throwing error, scoring on the next error with Dylan Hedler up to the plate, taking second.
- Brandon Ramirez sent a sacrifice fly out to left to bring Cardozo across, giving the Spartans a 6-3 lead.
- In the top of the sixth, Boyle sent a single to right field, bringing Mikey Raby Jr. across the plate, setting up Cardozo for a two-run home run on his next at-bat, extending Castleton's lead to six.
- The Thoroughbreds scored six unanswered runs in the bottom of the sixth and eighth to tie the game at nine heading into the final inning with daylight dwindling.
- With two runners on, Tommie Shaw stepped up to the plate, sending a single to left field, bringing Joe Castellano home.
- Shaw stole second with LaVigne up to bat, who sent a single down the right field line, with two runs coming home in the process to give the Spartans a 12-9 lead.
- Tyler Dubreuil and Boyle each shot doubles out to left and center field respectively, bringing in one run each, giving Castleton a 14-9 lead with three outs left.
- Skidmore found one more run on a sacrifice fly, but the Spartan defense and Nick Lescarbeau put an end to the Thoroughbred scoring.
Top Performers
Dubreuil led the Spartans with three hits, adding one RBI, while Boyle and LaVigne each notched two hits and three RBIs. Cardozo notched a home run and three RBIs. Five more players combined for five hits and two RBIs.
Luke Russell earned the nod on the mound, throwing five innings with one strikeout.
Adam Winchell saw two innings with two strikeouts, while
Michael Malloy faced four batters in the bottom of the eight. Lescarbeau earned the win, closing out the final two innings, with one strikeout.

With more unsettled weather coming through on Saturday, the Spartans will host Plymouth State in a LEC double-header on Friday, April 4, set for a 1 p.m. start.
