Baseball Topped by Beacons

BOSTON, Mass. – The Vermont State University Castleton baseball team fell in both games of Saturday's Little East Conference double-header against the Beacons of UMass Boston.

Game 1:
The Basics
  • Final Score: 4-3 (10 innings)
  • Location: Boston, Mass. – Monan Park

How it Happened
  • Castleton started hot in the first inning, with Tyler Dubreuil beginning the day with a single, followed by Jack Boyle singling to right field, with Dubreuil advancing to third.
  • On the next at-bat, Boyle stole second with Dubreuil still on first as Brandon Ramirez stepped up to the plate, launching a home run to center field to give the Spartans a 3-0 lead.
  • In the bottom of the second, the Beacons found a run, to lessen the lead to two.
  • The Spartans struggled to get things going again, leaving the bases loaded at the end of the fourth.
  • UMass Boston stole second, with another score coming across the plate in the bottom of the inning to be within one.
  • In the bottom of the ninth, the Beacons sent a single to left center field to tie the game up, forcing extra innings.
  • The Spartans went down in order to begin the 10th, with the Beacons swinging a single with the bases loaded to bring the winning run across the plate.
Top Performers
Dubreuil had a team-high three hits for the Spartans, with Tommie Shaw adding two. Six more players notched one hit each, with Ramirez earning the team's only RBIs with three.

Sam Crawford earned the start on the mound, throwing four strikeouts in six innings, with Alex Bingham closing out the final three and a third innings with one strikeout.

How it Happened
  • The Beacons struck first in game two of the day, with a single to center field, bringing in two runs to take a 2-0 lead.
  • UMass Boston scored three more runs before the Spartans could get out of the inning to extend their lead to 5-0.
  • Castleton answered in the second, with Sammy Steinman sending a double to left field to bring one run across the plate, later coming across the plate himself off a sacrifice fly to center field from Trey LaVigne to bring the score to 5-2.
  • The Beacons tacked on six more runs in the second inning to extend the lead to 11-2.
  • In the third, Jackson Cardozo singled to left field bringing a run in, with Steinman sending a single to right center field to bring two more runs across the plate.
  • In the top of the fourth innings, Boyle sent a single out to right field, advancing to second while Mikey Raby Jr. scored off a throwing error to bring the Spartans within five.
  • UMass Boston earned six more runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 17-6 lead.
  • Castleton found another run in the fifth, with the Beacons leading 17-7.
  • The Beacons tacked on their final six runs in the bottom of the fifth, taking a 23-7 lead.
  • Castleton's Justin Strozyk grounded into a double play, with Mason Meinke scoring, to give the Spartans eight runs, but wasn't enough to battle back against the Beacons.
Top Performers
Cardozo led the Spartans with three hits, adding one RBI, while five more Spartans notched two hits apiece. Steinman notched a team-high three RBIs.

Nick Lescarbeau, Adam Winchell, and Michael Malloy each three one inning for the Spartans, with Luke Russell throwing for one and two-thirds. Owen Phelps and Kevin Hewlett saw one-third of an inning each, with Keaton Nann throwing for two-thirds of an inning with the Spartan's lone strikeout of the day.

What's Next
Castleton will host LEC opponent Eastern Connecticut State in its home opener on Saturday, March 29, with the first pitch of the double-header set for 12 p.m.
