ALBANY, N.Y. – The Vermont State University Castleton men's lacrosse team earned its first win of the season with a dominant 17-7 victory over Russell Sage College on Tuesday night.

How It Happened
The Spartans found themselves trailing early, as Russell Sage jumped out to a 3-0 lead midway through the first quarter. However, Castleton responded with three goals in a one-minute span, capped by
Cam Frankenhoff's equalizer off an assist from
Ethan Esposito. The Gators reclaimed a 4-3 lead before the quarter ended, but it would be their last advantage of the game.
Castleton controlled the second quarter, shutting out Russell Sage while adding four unanswered goals.
Braydon Goddard's second unassisted goal of the game tied the score at 4-4, and
Liam Evarts,
Cam Frankenhoff, and Esposito followed with tallies to give the Spartans a 7-4 halftime advantage.
The Spartans continued their offensive surge in the third quarter, outscoring the Gators 6-1.
Carter Frankenhoff scored twice in the period, including an unassisted goal at the 11:17 mark to extend the lead to 8-4. Evarts,
Cam Frankenhoff, and
Jordan Damske also contributed goals, with Damske striking twice to help Castleton take a commanding 13-5 lead into the final frame.
Carter Frankenhoff's performance continued in the fourth, as he added two more unassisted goals to bring his game total to five. The Spartans outscored the Gators 4-2 in the period, with
Matt Gregoire capping off the victory with his first goal of the season at the 1:15 mark.
Defensively, goalkeeper
Zac Smith anchored the Spartans with 17 saves, holding the Gators to just three second-half goals. The defensive unit also forced 17 turnovers, while Castleton won the ground ball battle 39-28.
Top Performers
- Carter Frankenhoff had himself a day as he recorded a career-best five goals.
- Cam Frankenhoff and Evarts also finished the day with hat tricks, while the former also added an assist for four points.
- Goddard and Damske finished with two goals, while Esposito and Gregoire added one each.
