NORTHBOROUGH, Mass. – The Vermont State University Castleton baseball team earned a tight 5-4 win over Emerson, needing an extra inning to bring in the winning run.

How it Happened
- The Lions were the first to score, striking in the bottom of the first, sending a single through the left side to take a 1-0 lead.
- Jackson Cardozo and Joe Castellano stole a base each in the top of the fourth, with Castellano taking home to tie the game at one apiece.
- Emerson answered at the bottom of the inning, bringing in a run-off of a sacrifice fly to take back the lead.
- In the top of the sixth, Cardozo sent a sacrifice fly-up, bringing Castellano in to tie the game once again.
- The Spartans took the lead in the bottom of the eight, with Brandon Ramirez reaching first on a muffed throw, sending Cardozo home due to the error, making it 3-2.
- As the ninth inning got off to a start, Brendan Shader reached first on a throwing error, and then scored on the error to extend the Spartans lead to two heading into the bottom of the inning.
- The Lions put two more runs on the board at the bottom of the inning off a triple to tie the game at four and force extra innings.
- With Jack Boyle and Turner Clews on base, Shader sent a sacrifice fly out to right field to bring Boyle in to give Castleton back the lead.
- The Spartans held the Lions to just two runners on base, to claim the 5-4 victory.
Top Performers
Tyler Dubreuil led the Spartans with three hits, with Cardozo, Shader, Boyle, Clews, and
Tommie Shaw adding one each. Cardozo and Shader knocked in the team's only RBIs with one apiece.
Adam Winchell earned the start on the mound, throwing four and a third innings, earning a career-high eight strikeouts.
Stephen Coffey threw for two and two-thirds innings, with two strikeouts, and
Luke Russell closed out the final three innings with two strikeouts.
