TROY, N.Y. – The Vermont State University Castleton baseball team split Sunday's twin bill with the Engineers of RPI, suffering a close 4-1 loss in game one and turning up the heat in game two taking a 15-9 win with two six-run innings to complete the comeback.
Game 1:

How it Happened
- The Engineers struck first in the bottom of the first inning, sending a home run out to left field to take a 1-0 lead.
- Striking again in the second, the Engineers scored another run off a sacrifice fly to extend the lead to two.
- In the top of the sixth inning, the Spartan's Joe Castellano set a single out to right field with the bases loaded to bring one run across before the end of the innings to lessen the lead to one.
- The Engineers closed out the seventh and eighth innings bringing in two more runs to take the 4-1 win.

Justin Strozyk led the Spartans with two hits apiece, with Castellano bringing in the team's only RBI.
Alex Bingham earned the start for Castleton, pitching seven innings and throwing a career-high five strikeouts, with
Kevin Hewlett closing out the final inning and adding one strikeout.

How it Happened
- The Engineers opened the bottom of the fourth inning with a two-run home run to take a 2-0 lead, but not before the Spartans had something to say about it.
- Sammy Steinman slammed his first career home run out to right field to bring two runs across the plate to tie the game in the top of the fifth.
- RPI tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 5-3 lead.
- Boyle earned a walk with the bases loaded, for another Spartan score to come across the plate in the sixth.
- The Engineers notched a grand slam in the bottom of the seventh to extend the lead to 9-3.
- The Spartans gained momentum at the top of the eighth, with Turner Clews bringing in two runs. Jackson Cardozo walked shortly after to bring in the third run of the inning.
- Boyle and Dylan Hedler earned walks to bring one run in apiece, followed by Brendan Shader being hit by a pitch to take a base with another run coming in to tie the game a nine.
- With the game tied at the end of nine innings, Castleton stepped on the gas in the top of the 10th, with Steinman sending a double to right center field, bringing two more runs in to take an 11-9 lead.
- Clews slammed a triple out to right center, bringing Steinman and Shader home.
- Mikey Raby Jr. was walked on the next at-bat, with Clews scoring on a passed ball.
- Cardozo reached first base on a fielding error, sending Castellano home to put the Spartans up 15-9.
- Michael Malloy helped the Castleton fielders in the final at-bat of the game throwing one strikeout to secure the victory.
Top Performers
Castellano, Shader, Steinman, and Clews led Castleton with two hits each, with Steinman and Clews adding four RBIs each.
Ethan Nichols notched the start for Castleton, throwing three strikeouts in four innings, with
Keaton Nann going two and a third, adding two strikeouts.
Owen Phelps earned one strikeout in one and two-thirds innings, with Malloy closing out the final two innings with one strikeout.
