Baseball Falls to Knights in Twin Bill

ASTON, Penn. – The Vermont State University Castleton baseball team dropped both close games of Saturday's double-header at Neumann. The Spartans fell 3-1 in game one, and 5-2 in game two.

Game 1:

The Basics
  • Final Score: 3-1
  • Location: Bruder Baseball Field – Aston, Penn.
  • Records: Neumann 5-3 | Castleton 1-9

How it Happened
  • The Knights were on the board first, with a double sent out to right field to bring two runs in to go up 2-0 in the bottom of the first.
  • They struck again in the bottom of the second, with a double out to left-center field for an RBI, extending the lead to 3-0.
  • The Spartans held the Knights offense off in the third, allowing no runs with two errors and three left on base.
  • In the top of the sixth, Castleton found a run, with Jackson Cardozo up to bat with Tyler Dubreuil and Mikey Raby Jr. on base.
  • Cardozo sent a single through the right side to bring Raby in for the Spartan's first score of the game to lessen the Knights lead to two.
  • The Spartans put the Knights down in a row at the top of the sixth, but could not find any more scores in the seventh to give the Knights the win.

Top Performers
Dubreuil and Cardozo led the Spartans with one hit apiece, with Cardozo notching the team's only RBI.

Sam Crawford threw all six innings for the Spartans in the loss, with one strikeout.

Game 2:

The Basics

  • Location: Bruder Baseball Field – Aston, Penn.
  • Records: Neumann 6-3 | Castleton 1-10

How it Happened
  • The Knights struck first again in game two to in the bottom of the first inning.
  • In the bottom of the second, they found themselves on the board again, bringing in one run off a triple to right field.
  • Neumann tacked on one more run in the bottom of the fourth before the Spartans could get on the board.
  • Dubreuil came up to bat with Trey LaVigne on second, swinging a double down the right-field line to bring LaVigne in.
  • Dubreuil advanced off of an error, eventually rounding third to cross home plate and lessen the lead to one.
  • The Knights tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the sixth, giving the Spartans one more at-bat.
  • The Spartans went down in order, falling 5-2 to Neumann.

Top Performers
Dubreuil and Tommie Shaw led Castleton with two hits each, with Dubreuil earning the squad's lone RBI of the game. Cardozo and LaVigne added one hit apiece.

Nick Lescarbeau earned the start for the Spartans, pitching three strikeouts through four innings. Michael Malloy came on in relief for one inning, and Owen Phelps closed out in the sixth with one strikeout.

The Spartans head to RPI in Troy, N.Y. for a double-header beginning at noon tomorrow (March 16).
