Baseball Bested by YellowJackets

LONGVIEW, Texas. – The Vermont State University Castleton baseball team battled with a tough southern team for the second night in a row, falling 15-7 to the LeTourneau YellowJackets.

The Basics

Both teams entered the night 1-2, with the Spartans on day three of their southern road trip to kick off the season. The trip started with a loss to the University of the Ozarks, followed by a win over Principia, and then a loss to Hendrix yesterday. The YellowJackets faced Millsaps three times to start the season, with two losses and a win.

How it Happened

The Spartans got off to a hot start, with Tyler McLain sending a double out to center field to bring in two RBIs to put the Spartans up 2-0 to start the first inning. The YellowJackets found one answer at the bottom of the first to bring the score to 2-1. Jack Boyle answered at the top of the second, with a single to center field bringing in another run. Tyler Dubreuil lengthened the lead at the top of the third, swinging a single to bring in two more runs across the plate, giving the Spartans a 5-1 advantage.

The YellowJackets did not back down, scoring four runs in the bottom of the third, to tie the game at five apiece. Taking the lead in the bottom of the fifth, LeTourneau scored three more runs to go up 8-5. Justin Strozyk struck a single down the right field line to bring one run across the plate in the top of the sixth to lessen the lead to two. McLain grounded out to second in the seventh, bringing the Spartan's final run of the night in to cut the YellowJacket's lead to one. LeTourneau scored five unanswered runs in the bottom of the eighth, and the Spartans went out in order at the top of the ninth to give the YellowJackets the 15-7 win.

Top Performers

Strozyk led the Spartan's offense with three hits, and McLain and Mikey Raby Jr. added two each. McLain batted in three RBIs, with Dubreuil adding two.

Alex Bingham earned the start for Castleton, seeing through three innings, throwing two strikeouts. Keaton Nann made his collegiate debut, throwing four innings, notching two strikeouts. Owen Phelps closed out the game in the eighth with three strikeouts.

Castleton heads over to Louisiana tomorrow (February 26) in a matchup with Centenary College, with the first pitch commencing at 7 p.m. EST.
