CONWAY, Ark. – The Vermont State University Castleton baseball team fell in a tight battle with the Hendrix Warriors Monday evening. Within one to start the eighth inning, the Warriors pulled away in their final at-bat to secure the 6-3 win.
The Basics
The Spartans now sit at a 1-2 record, following Saturday's loss to the University of the Ozarks and their win over Principia College later that evening. Hendrix sits 4-3 to start the season, following two losses to Dominican University on Sunday and Monday.
How it Happened
The Spartans found themselves on the board to start the third inning, with Jack Boyle swinging a single to right field to bring in Tyler Dubreuil. After a walk for the Spartans, Tyler McLain grounded out to the shortstop which brought Boyle in to put Castleton up 2-0. The Warriors answered in the bottom of the inning, with two singles and a sacrifice fly, to take a 4-2 heading into the fourth.
Castleton fought through multiple pitching changes by the Warriors to get back in the scoring column. Boyle connected for a single once again to bring in Dubreuil and lessen the lead to one. Patrick Hallett and Michael Malloy pitched the final inning at bat for the Warriors, with the Warriors finding two more scores to take a 6-3 lead heading into the ninth. The Spartans went out in order, to give Hendrix the win.
