Women's Basketball Overwhelmed by Panthers

CASTLETON, Vt. – The Vermont State University Castleton women's basketball team hosted the Panthers of Middlebury College for a midweek non-conference matchup before the holiday break, falling 68-40 Tuesday afternoon.

How it Happened:
The Panthers jumped out to a 7-0 lead three minutes into the first quarter, before Nevaeh Camp laid in a basket to get Castleton on the board. Maggie McKearin knocked down her first three-pointer of the day to energize the Spartans, but Middlebury extended its lead to 17-6 by the end of the opening frame.

McKearin drained her second three of the day in the opening minute of the second quarter, trimming the Panthers' lead to eight (17-9). The Spartans' bench provided a spark in the second frame, combining for 10 points. Kyrielle Deuso scored a jump shot as the buzzer sounded, pulling Castleton within seven, heading into halftime.

The Panthers applied pressure in the third quarter, piling up 26 points. Arianna Coombs cut the lead to four with seven minutes left in the quarter with a layup (32-28), but the Panthers responded with a dominant stretch, holding Castleton to four points through the remainder of the frame.

McKearin scored her final bucket of the afternoon with seven minutes to go in the game, cutting the Panthers' lead to 23. Castleton tightened up defensively in the fourth, limiting Middlebury to 12 points, but the deficit proved too large as the Panthers secured the 68-40 win.

By the Numbers:
  • McKearin led the team with 11 points, going 3-5 from the three-point line, adding three rebounds and a steal.
  • Emily Adams grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds to go along with three points and one steal.
What's Next
The team returns from the holiday break on Wednesday, December 3, to open Little East Conference play at home against Keene State at home. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
