Women's Basketball Comes Up Short in LEC Bout With Owls

CASTLETON, Vt. – The Vermont State University Castleton women's basketball team opened Little East Conference play Wednesday night as they battled with Keene State, but ultimately fell 76-65.

How it Happened:
The two teams battled neck and neck through the first quarter, despite Keene jumping out to a 4-0 lead in the first two minutes. Kyrielle Deuso drained a three-pointer to bring the Spartans within one at the seven-minute mark. Nevaeh Camp tied the game up at six with a layup before the Owls scored five unanswered points (11-6). Maggie McKearin notched her first points of the day with three minutes to go, and gave Castleton a one-point lead a minute later (14-13). Arianna Coombs scored the final bucket of the first quarter with four seconds left, giving the Spartans an 18-15 lead.

Momentum shifted in the second quarter as Keene outscored Castleton 18-15, resulting in five ties during the frame. The Spartans capitalized on the Owls' turnovers, adding seven points. McKearin's fast break layup off a steal tied the game at 27 with three and a half minutes left. With less than a minute remaining, Emily Adams restored the lead for the Spartans, but Keene quickly answered, tying the game with 12 seconds left and sending both teams into halftime deadlocked.

The pace accelerated in the third quarter, with Keene taking their largest lead at 52-42. Though Deuso's three-pointer helped the Spartans narrow the gap, Keene closed the quarter with a free throw to make it 53-45 entering the final period.

Keene opened the final quarter with a layup to get back to a 10-point lead, before McKearin sank another layup less than a minute in (55-47). The two teams traded baskets back and forth, with the Owls finding themselves with a 12-point lead with just under a minute left to play. McKearin buried a three-pointer for her final points of the day (74-65), but Keene knocked down two free throws before time expired, taking the 76-65 win.

  • McKearin led the team with 16 points, grabbing five rebounds, and dishing out three assists.
  • Adams led in rebounding with 11, contributing six points, a team-high four assists, and three steals.
