Men's Soccer Secures In-State Victory Over Badgers

CASTLETON, Vt. – The Vermont State University Castleton men's soccer team topped fellow VTSU school Johnson 3-1 Tuesday night under the lights of Dave Wolk Stadium, behind three different goal scorers and a career-best performance from Alex Roy in net.

The Basics:
  • Final Score: 3-1 Castleton
  • Location: Castleton, Vt. – Dave Wolk Stadium
  • Records: 5-6-0 Castleton | 4-3-1 Johnson
How it Happened:
  • The Spartans outshot the Badgers 11-6 through the first half, breaking through in the sixth minute as Matt Spiller quickly slid, pushing the ball up to El Hadji Iba Sy, waiting at the top of the box, who was able to shoot around a defender and the goalie, putting Castleton up 1-0.
  • The Badgers fired back in the 11th minute to even up the score after two close corner kick opportunities from the Spartans.
  • As Johnson put pressure on Roy and his defensive line, the team was able to block two shots while forcing the others wide, keeping it 1-1 heading into the second half.
  • Less than 10 minutes into the second half, Liam Cramer slipped the ball past defenders to Sean Butler, waiting five yards outside the box, who side-stepped on his defender to blast the ball into the left side of the net, giving the Spartans the lead.
  • Castleton had five shot opportunities and two corner kicks before Spiller took a free kick in the 84th minute, finding a moving Michael O'Connor who tipped the ball past the keeper for the final goal of the night, giving the Spartans a 3-1 victory.
By the Numbers:
  • Roy finished with a career-best five saves through 90 minutes, earning his third win of the season.
  • Spiller finished with two assists, while Sy, Butler, and O'Connor earned two points each from their goals.
