Field Hockey Tripped Up at Western New England

SPRINGFIELD, MASS. – The Vermont State University Castleton field hockey fell at Western New England University on Tuesday afternoon, 2-1.

The Basics
  • Final Score: Western New England 2, VTSU Castleton 1
  • Location: Golden Bear Stadium – Springfield, Mass.
  • Records: WNE 8-5 | Castleton 5-6

How It Happened
Despite Castleton receiving the first penalty corner of the day, it was WNE who scored first, going up 1-0 midway through the first quarter.

The Spartans found their fire early in the second quarter, seeing four penalty corners and three blocked shots in a 50 second span. They were finally able to find the back of the cage as time ran out on the half, as Gwyn Vincent was able to score off a Madison Gile dish with 47 seconds left on the clock, knotting it 1-1.

The third quarter was all Golden Bears as they peppered the Spartan defense with shots. Castleton blocked four shots while Zoe Martin made two saves, while letting up one goal. The hosts owned a 2-1 advantage heading into the final stanza.

Quarter four was by far the quietest of the day, seeing just three shots on goal, two by WNE and one by Castleton. The Golden Bears were able to hold on for a narrow 2-1 win.

By the Numbers
  • Vincent continues to lead the Castleton offense as she scored her seventh goal of the season. She is also atop the team in points (19) and assists (5).
  • Gile finds herself second in assists with four after recording one on the Spartans' lone score.
  • Martin stood tall in the cage, making 11 stops on 13 shots faced.
  • Proving to be extremely aggressive, WNE earned itself five green cards and one yellow, while Castleton only had a singular green.
  • The match proved to be a good test of things to come as WNE downed Keene State 4-1 last month, while Castleton was able to hold them to two scores.

What's Next
The Spartans will remain on the road as they travel to Eastern Connecticut State University on Saturday for an LEC battle with the Warriors, set to start at 12 p.m.
