Women's Soccer Hosts Southern Maine for Breast Cancer Awareness Game

CASTLETON, Vt. – The Vermont State University Castleton women's soccer team hosted the Huskies of Southern Maine Friday afternoon for the team's Breast Cancer Awareness Game. The Spartans fell 4-1 in the Little East Conference contest.

How it Happened:
  • The Huskies jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the first minute, before the Spartans took the ball down to the other end of the field and found themselves with a corner kick opportunity that was unsuccessful.
  • In the fifth minute, Maggie McKearin dribbled past her defender and scored in the lower right corner, quickly tying the game at 1-1.
  • McKearin came close to her second goal of the day in the 11th minute with a header that grazed the crossbar as the Huskies kicked it into high gear for the remainder of the first half, with six shots off target.
  • In the 41st minute, a Spartan yellow card led to a penalty kick for the Huskies, which was buried to give them a 2-1 lead.
  • Southern Maine scored their final two goals in the 52nd and 56th minutes respectively, as Chloe Green put up two shots on Halle Brown but was stopped.
  • Both teams battled for the final 30 minutes of play, collectively getting off three shots, but the Spartans were unable to find the back of the net, resulting in the 4-1 win for Southern Maine.
