GENEVA, N.Y. – The Vermont State University Castleton women's hockey team fell short to William Smith College 2-1 in overtime.
Castleton dominated the first period, outshooting the Herons 16-9. In the closing seconds of the opening period,
Caris Erickson connected with
Madeleine Corrigan who buried the puck into the net for the first time in her career to give the Spartans a 1-0 lead.
A quiet second period was headlined by
Victoria Bakopanos who took between the pipes for Castleton. She stopped 21 shots in Saturday's contest.
Castleton continued to control the game and keep the Herons from generating momentum. Rainy Lay,
Nora Hundsnes Pollestad, and
Maysa Ford provided blocks and interceptions that highlighted a strong defensive game from the Spartans.
With five seconds remaining in the game, the Herons snuck in the tying goal they needed to send the game into overtime. William Smith's Kayla Ketchabaw found the game-winning goal in overtime to secure the victory over the Spartans.
The two sides face off again tomorrow at 2 p.m.
