GENEVA, N.Y. – The Vermont State University Castleton women's hockey team dropped to William Smith College 1-0 in overtime.
Castleton and William battled up and down the ice all afternoon. The two sides kept each other in check and limited the number of chances on offense.
William Smith started to gain some momentum on offense, but
Victoria Bakopanos denied them all opportunities. She made double-digit saves in each period and finished with 45 saves. The Kirkland, Quebec native has made 40+ saves in four games this season.
Castleton dominated on the faceoffs winning the battle 37-24.
Meg Aiken won 13,
Mikayla Brightman won 12 and
Taylor Adams claimed 10 in Castleton's favor.
The two sides continued to look for the go-ahead goal but found no success in 60 minutes and needed to head into overtime for a second straight day. William Smith's Bella Hacker took a shot hit the inside of the post and bounced into the back of the net to give the Herons the victory.
VTSU Castleton returns to action Wednesday, January 29 at 7:15 p.m. against Keene State.
