NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Vermont State University Castleton field hockey team cruised to their first victory of the season, taking down Albertus Magnus, 8-0 on Saturday afternoon.
The Spartans had seven different goal scorers, with senior Amelia Wilson scoring twice. Rookies Gwyn Vincent and Mackenna Roberson scored their first career goals this afternoon, with Emily Downing, Peyton Richardson, Jess Smithson, and Sierra McDermott all tacking on one goal each.
The first half saw a slow first quarter with neither side scoring. The Spartans put up 12 shots, while Albertus Magnus put up none. The Falcons blocked three shots, and goalie Ella Welton saved seven shots in the first quarter. The Spartans struck seven minutes into the second quarter, with Roberson netting her first career goal from Genevieve Pitts. The Spartans scored three more times to finish out the half, with Richardson scoring once, and Wilson scoring twice.
The Spartans did not let up in the second half putting up four more goals to secure the win. Vincent notched her first career goal a minute and a half into the third quarter, with Ava LaRoss notching her first career assist. Downing and McDermott scored back-to-back to finish out the scoring in the third quarter. Welton saved three more shots in the fourth, bring her to 24 saves on the day. Smithson struck a minute and a half into the fourth quarter, with Haley Lassen notching the assist.
The Spartans are back in action at RPI on Wednesday, September 11 at 4 p.m.
