TROY, N.Y. – The Vermont State University Castleton field hockey team earned their second win in a row, defeating RPI 4-3 in overtime Wednesday afternoon.
The Spartans' golden goal came three minutes into overtime, with
Jess Smithson scoring off of a penalty corner from
Amelia Wilson to secure the win.
Zoe Martin made 11 saves on the night, with the Engineers out-shooting the Spartans 29-16.
RPI outshot the Spartans (2-2) 7-3 in the first quarter, with neither side breaking through and scoring until the beginning of the second. The Engineers struck first, with Abby Peterson netting a goal one minute into the frame. The Spartans responded with two minutes left in the half when
Peyton Richardson netted her third goal of the season on an assist from Smithson, sending the game to halftime tied at 1-1.
Castleton scored first in the second half, with
Arianna Spiezio scoring her first goal as a Spartan five minutes into the third quarter from
Emily Downing. They extended the lead to 3-1 before the end of the third quarter, with rookie
Ava LaRoss scoring her first career goal. The Engineers were quick to answer, scoring twice in a four-minute span to tie the game with 10 minutes left and force overtime.
Overtime was short-lived, as Smithson sent the winning goal to the back of the cage just three minutes into the extra period.
The Spartans are back in action at home on Saturday, September 14 at 12 p.m. against Husson.
