FITCHBURG, Mass. – Vermont State University Castleton defeated Fitchburg 2-0 on Tuesday afternoon.
VTSU Castleton faced off against Fitchburg State Tuesday afternoon. The Spartans went right to work and found themselves on the scoreboard early after a corner kick opportunity provided by
Toby Ritzkowski who lofted the ball to the back post where
Liam Cramer connected on the pass and smashed it past the keeper for his first of the season in the 2nd minute giving Castleton a 1-0 lead.
Castleton's offense generated many opportunities with 16 shots coming from the Spartans side. With the many opportunities came Castleton's second goal in the 31st minute with the help of the Alfani brothers. On the counterattack was
Adolphe Alfani who dashed by the opposition and carried it down into the box where he split a pass between the defenders and found younger brother
Jacques Alfani who buried the goal for his second of the season to score in back-to-back games and extended Castleton's lead to two.
The Spartans defense gave the Falcons struggles to generate anything offensively. When Fitchburg did find their way, first-year
Xander Berthiaume stopped everything that came his way, making seven saves to earn his first career shutout.
VTSU Castleton returns to action on Saturday, September 7 at 1:00 p.m. against Clarkson at Dave Wolk Stadium.
