PROVIDENCE, R.I. -The Vermont State University Castleton men's soccer was defeated by Rhode Island College 2-1 Saturday afternoon.
VTSU Castleton clashed with RIC in their first Little East Conference matchup. The Anchormen opened the scoring immediately with a goal by Anthony Recinos in the fourth minute to put RIC up early. The Anchormen controlled the game early on and were able to capitalize on the home momentum. Jackson Fox scored in the 17th minute to extend RIC's lead to two.
Castleton would go on to find an answer for the Anchormen's offense with a
Toby Ritzkowski goal in the 26th minute to get the Spartans back into the game and trail by one after the first half.
Recinos would connect with Fox for his second goal of the match in the 56th minute to extend RIC's lead back to two. Castleton eager to get back into the game, would score a late goal by first-year
Jacques Alfani to trail only by one once again. However, the Spartans late comeback effort wouldn't be enough and the Anchormen would hold to give the Spartans their first conference loss of the season.
VTSU Castleton returns to play Tuesday, September 24 at 7:00 p.m. against Norwich at Dave Wolk Stadium.
