Women's Volleyball Buzzes by Hornets

CASTLETON, Vt. – The Vermont State University Castleton women's volleyball team snagged a 3-0 victory over Vermont State University Lyndon on Friday evening at Glenbrook Gym.

The Spartans swept the night 25-9, 25-7, 25-7, racking up 25 aces in the match as well as 27 kills and 17 digs. Castleton hit .420 as a team, a top-10 single game mark in program history.

Kaitlyn Chapman had eight kills on nine swings to lead the Spartans, while Jocelyn Ray had six kills. Alondra Rojas totaled 12 points thanks to five kills and seven aces while chipping in 19 assists. Hailey Martinovich added five kills as well. Ray and Nicolette Vaughn each had four aces, with both liberos—Victoria Garcia and Delia Roulston—notching six digs.

Lyndon got three kills from Hannah Badertscher and one from Emily Anderson. Anderson and Kazandra Gonzalez had five digs each.

The Spartans earned points in chunks all night long, using runs of four, five and six points in the first set to take a commanding 25-9 victory. In the second set, Castleton opened an 8-1 lead that included three aces and four kills in the stretch. An 8-0 run later in the set made it 20-3 before the Spartans closed it out 25-7 for a 2-0 lead in the match. The final set was more of the same, with the Spartans scoring eight straight points to start. The lead grew to 15-1 before a Hornet timeout stopped the run and got Lyndon back on the board, but the gap was too large as Castleton pulled away for a 25-7 win in the final frame to complete the 3-0 sweep.

VTSU Castleton is back in action Wednesday night when it hosts Norwich at 6 p.m.
