CASTLETON, Vt. – The Vermont State University Castleton field hockey team earned its second overtime win on Friday night against SUNY Oneonta, 4-3.
The first quarter of play saw seven shots from the Spartans and three from the Red Dragons, with neither side breaking through to open the scoring. The Red Dragons struck twice in the second quarter on back-to-back goals with two minutes remaining in the first half.
The Spartans opened the scoring for the second half with a penalty stroke from
Jess Smithson to get the Spartans back within one, before a quiet remaining third quarter.
Gwyn Vincent scored her third goal of the season six minutes into the fourth quarter to tie the game.
Amelia Wilson put the Spartans up by one with seven minutes remaining in the game. The Red Dragons snuck one more goal in three seconds before time expired to force overtime.
One minute into overtime Wilson took a penalty corner with
Jess Smithson dishing out the assist to
Madison Gile to secure the overtime win for her first goal of the season.
The Spartans are back in action at Dave Wolk Stadium on Tuesday, September 24 against Westfield State at 4 p.m.
