Women's Soccer Pummels Potsdam 4-1

CASTLETON, Vt. – The Vermont State University Castleton women's soccer team defeated SUNY Potsdam 4-1 Saturday afternoon.

VTSU Castleton and SUNY Potsdam took on the warm conditions in a non-conference battle at Dave Wolk Stadium Saturday afternoon. To kick things off was a free kick opportunity in the 14th minute for the Spartans. Lauren Fotter took the kick and played a ball to the back post where Alexis Billings made an aggressive run and connected on the play with a header to open the scoring.

After Billings' goal, the play settled down, and only five shots were taken between both sides. It was the second half where the Spartans ignited the fireworks. In the 51st minute, Billings drove down the wing and fed a ball to fellow forward Maggie McKearin, who thrashed the opportunity to extend Castleton's lead to two.

Riding high on the momentum, the Spartans offense continued to press the Bears in their defensive zone. Rylee Pepin played a deep ball that directly landed on Billings' foot, who took a touch and slotted the play to score her second of the game and give the Spartans a 3-0 in the 54th minute.

Potsdam's Sarah Emmi was able to sneak one by the Spartans in the 68th minute to bring the score back within two. However, the Spartans would answer with an Emma Kirby goal to finalize the Spartan's scoring and victory at home.

VTSU Castleton returns to play Wednesday, September 18 at 6:00 p.m. against MCLA.
