Field Hockey Outlasts Husson

CASTLETON, Vt. – The Vermont State University Castleton field hockey team earned a 3-2 win against Husson (3-2) Saturday afternoon.
 
The Eagles struck first one minute into the game with a goal from Faith Tillotson, but the Spartans quickly put up two shots to test the Eagles, with one being blocked and the other resulting in a defensive save. Haley Lassen opened up the scoring for the Spartans ripping a shot two minutes in to tie the game, and notch her first goal of the season. The Eagles finished out the first half with a goal from Tessa Capozzoli to take a 2-1 lead going into halftime.

Gwyn Vincent took on the Eagles by herself to score the Spartans' second goal four minutes into the third quarter to tie the game yet again. The rest of the third quarter was quiet, with the Eagles putting up three shots, and the Spartans putting up two. Zoe Martin and Maddie Stevens each only had one save in the frame, and Martin finished the game with four saves.
 
The Spartans' defense was back at it blocking four shots to start the fourth quarter before Emily Downing knocked home the final goal for the Spartans from Jess Smithson to close out the game and secure the win.
 
The Spartans are back in action on the road at Skidmore on Tuesday, September 17 and 4 p.m.
