WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – The Vermont State University Castleton baseball team lost to Williams College Tuesday afternoon in six innings due to rain with a final score of 8-3.
The two teams went scoreless in the initial inning before Williams opened the scoring with an RBI single to give the Ephs a 1-0 lead. Williams showcased aggressive base running that earned them three stolen bases. The Ephs cashed in on the aggressive play call with three runs coming home in the third inning to put them up by four.
VTSU Castleton responded with two singles by
Brendan Shader and
Alexander Andrew to get the momentum going for the Spartans.
Trey LaVigne sent a single toward the right fielder, allowing Shader to reach home and give Castleton their first score of the game. A sacrifice fly from
Tyler McLain allowed for LaVigne to make it home and bring Castleton within two.
Sean Lawerence entered the game at the mound and made a quick inning for the Ephs to get the Spartans back on the offense. Williams' pitchers caused an error, allowing for Shader to get into scoring position. The Spartans capitalized on the error with Andrew connecting at the plate for a single to bring home Shader to only trail by one. Lawrence continued to be efficient on the mound with an easy 1-2-3 to round off a strong fifth inning for the Spartans.
The sixth was highlighted by three errors from the Spartans, which allowed Williams to get into scoring positions and bring in four runners on two hits to open their lead once again. With the rain becoming a factor, the game was concluded early with the Ephs claiming the victory.
The Spartans return to action on Saturday, April 6 against Plymouth St.
