KEENE, N.H. – The Vermont State University Castleton baseball team fell to Keene St. Tuesday afternoon, 19-5.
The Spartans (3-24, 0-7) began with
Tyler McLain (3-4) sending a single toward left field, allowing
Hunter Perkins (2-3) to reach home from second base to open the scoring.
Jackson Cardozo (2-4) had three runs in today's contest, with one of them coming in the first inning to give Castleton a 2-0.
Keene (13-15, 4-4) answered with seven runs on five hits taking a 7-2 lead over Castleton. The Owls continued to pile up the runs with three more coming in the second inning to extend their lead to 10.
Despite the lead, Castleton kept the bats swinging to try and get back into the game. After reaching base from his at-bat, Cardozo made his way around the diamond to tally another run for the Spartans. He collected his third run of the day after McLain connected on the pitch for a double down the right field to send him home and put the lead at 10-4. Castleton grabbed another run with Perkins hitting for a single and advancing the runners to bring in
Jared Cafasso for the Spartan's fifth run of the game.
The Owls capped off the game with five hits and eight runs in the sixth inning to end the game at seven innings with a 19-5 victory.
The Spartans return to action for their home opener on Wednesday, April 17 at 4 p.m. against Union College.
