Baseball Falls in Explosive Outing Against Union

CASTLETON, Vt. – The Vermont State University Castleton baseball team was defeated by Union College Wednesday afternoon, 24-13.

A game of offense took over in Castleton as 37 runs were scored in the matchup. Union (18-6) opened the scoring with three runs in the first inning. Union's Liam Mcllroy added a three-run home run in the third inning to help extend Union's lead to eight. The Garnet Chargers continued to light up the scoreboard, as they exploded for 12 runs on eight hits in the fourth inning to go up by 20.

Despite the score, the Spartans (3-25) didn't give in and started to collect some hits for themselves. Castleton loaded up the bases in the fourth inning, where Hunter Perkins (2-5) got the Spartans their first run of the game after scoring on an RBI groundout to first. Alexander Andrew (1-4) provided a two-run single to tack on more runs for the Spartans. The Spartans were able to bat around and Perkins smashed a single through the right side and brought in two more runners to cap off a six-run inning for VTSU Castleton.

Castleton kept Union on their toes, as they followed up with another big inning to get themselves back into the game. Mikey Raby Jr. (1-3) hit a single through the right side and a bobble by the right fielder allowed for Tyler McLain (0-1, 3 BB) to score. Jared Cafasso sent a base hit up the middle to advance the runners and score Dylan Helder as well. With runners on first and second, Jack Boyle (1-4) crushed a ball for a three-run home run to bring the score to 21-11.

The Spartans found two more runs in the sixth inning, with Jackson Cardozo (2-5) scoring on an error from the Garnet Chargers and Tommie Shaw (0-2) being brought in with an RBI single from Trey LaVigne (1-3).

Despite the valiant effort from the Spartans, the Garnet Chargers extended their lead to 24 and kept Castleton scoreless in the final three innings to take the victory.

The Spartans return to action on Saturday, April 20 at 1 p.m. against Western Connecticut St.
