Baseball Edged Out by Majors, 7-6

JACKSON, Mo. Vermont State University Castleton baseball was defeated by Millsaps College Monday evening, 7-6.
 
VTSU Castleton (0-4) dropped to Millsaps College (8-3) 7-6 Monday night. Hunter Perkins (2-4) extended his hitting streak to four games, with to two RBI'S, two runs and the Spartans first home run of the season. Brendan Shader (2-5) collected two runs, Jared Maher (2-4) had a run and an RBI and Jackson Cardozo (1-3) also collected an RBI in the loss.
 
Looking to secure their first win of the season, the Spartans came out firing in the first inning. They went 4-4 to begin the game, with Cardozo advancing the runners with a single to center field to open the scoring. First year Tommie Shaw then provided a sacrifice fly out which allowed for Shader to slide into home plate to extend the lead. With bases still loaded, Tyler Dubreuil connected on a single to bring Maher home and end the inning with a 3-1 lead.
 
The Majors connected on pitch that brought in two runners on a double to tie the game at three. After some early runs allowed, Nick Lescarbeau settled in for 6.2 innings and controlled the game. Keeping the game tied at 3 through the middle innings. Maher would find his second hit of the game sent to center field where he brought in Dylan Hedler at the top of the fourth to take back the lead.
 
At the top of the sixth inning, Perkins stepped up to the plate and crushed a solo home run to right field to extend the Spartans lead to 5 and secure his first home run of the season. Castleton rode the momentum, getting two players on base with Tommie Shaw up to bat. Shaw say the first pitch go wide of him, which allowed for runners to advance and for Shader to snag a run to give Castleton a 6-3 lead.
 
Millsap eventually found their game again in the late innings. The Majors would find two scores in the seventh to bring them back into the game 6-5. They pulled off a quick 1-2-3 on Castleton in the eighth to allow them for a chance to tie or take the lead, in which they did. Connecting on multiple pitches, the Majors would get two more scores to take their first lead of the game at the bottom of the eighth, 7-6. The Spartans had one more inning to try and get a least a score to tie the game, but would come up short and fall in tonight's contest.
 
VTSU Castleton returns to action Tuesday, February 27 at 6 p.m. ET (5 p.m. CT) against LeTourneau University.
