Women's Hockey Falls Short to UMass Boston, 2-1

BOSTON, Mass. – The Vermont State University Castleton women's hockey was defeated by UMass Boston, 2-1 Saturday afternoon in New England Hockey Conference play.

The Spartans fell a goal short to the Beacons to put their conference record to 2-3-1, while Boston stays undefeated at 6-0-0.

Game two was a battle from start to finish, with the first period being highlighted by the goalies not allowing anything to slip by them and leaving the game scoreless after one. Victoria Bakopanos got the start in net and made 21 saves for the Spartans. Leah Bosch made 33 saves for the Beacons.

UMass Boston's Cassidy Morrison opened the scoring with a powerplay goal with 3:13 seconds left in the second period to give Boston a 1-0 lead. The Beacons extended their lead early in the third period to put the game at 2-0.

Castleton was able to find an answer with Rachel McNeil and Madeleine Corrigan, setting up Caris Erickson for her first career goal to bring the Spartans back within one with nine minutes left to play in the final period. Corrigan earned her first career point on the play.

Despite the Spartans' strong efforts, the Beacons held on to their lead and took both games in the series at home.

VTSU Castleton returns to action on the road Tuesday, November 26 at 4 p.m. against No. 3 Middlebury.
