RUTLAND, Vt. – The Vermont State University Castleton women's hockey team defeated New England Hockey Conference opponent Albertus Magnus in historic fashion, 12-3 on their Sock Toss promotion game Friday evening.
Nine different Spartans lit the lamp, with Brooke Noble, Annika Nelson, and Ellie Schliebener each bagging a pair of goals. Schliebener and Noble joined Moa Carlsson with four points, while Victoria Bakopanos earned her second victory on the year with 21 saves to secure Castleton's first win in conference play.
The historic night began in just seconds as Schliebener and Meg Aiken connected with Carlsson to score the first goal of the game, which brought fans to toss their socks, mittens, hats, and other cold-weather items onto the ice and be donated to the Rutland County Parent-Child Center for families in need.
Albertus spoiled the fun when Tori Walsh scored on the powerplay to even the score at one apiece.
Castleton didn't keep the game tied for long, as Alex Johnson crashed the net to find a rebounding shot from Noble that slid its way past the goalie to give Castleton the lead again late in the first period. Castleton earned themselves a powerplay in the final minutes of the first period and capitalized on the opportunity with Taylor Adams and Emery Bonner setting up Victoria Griffin who sniped the top shelf to give the Spartans a 4-1 lead.
An eight-goal second period began with Aiken stealing a puck on Albertus' powerplay and tucking the puck into the net to extend Castleton's lead to five. The Spartans' penalty kill wasn't done there as Mikayla Brightman and Maysa Ford connected with Bonner who rifled a shot top corner to give Castleton their second shorthanded goal of the game in just 36 seconds.
Noble and Nelson each scored their first career goals to lengthen Castleton's lead in the second period. Walsh and Molly Martin tallied two goals for the Falcons but Noble and Schliebener would negate those scores with goals of their own to bring a high-scoring second to an end at 9-3.
Nelson's second goal put the Spartans in double-digits for the first time since 2013. Schliebener tallied her second goal of the game with the help from Carlsson and Aiken and sealing the deal was Nora Pollestad for her first goal of the season to cap off an historic night for the Spartans.
