Women's Basketball Drops to Potsdam on the Road

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Vermont State University Castleton women's basketball team dropped to 1-2 on the season after falling in its second contest of the Cardinal Classic, 59-45 to SUNY Potsdam on Saturday afternoon.

The first quarter was close, despite seeing VTSU Castleton trailing early, able to tie game 6-6 at 2:42 off a Maggie Parker Layup. They trailed 10-8 heading into the second.

The Spartans and Bears traded misses to open the second stanza, but it was Emily Adams who was able to break the ice on a layup at 8:44 to make it 10-10. The pair continued to trade blows, tied again at 7:25 off a Stasia Epler jumper (13-13).

Castleton gained its first lead of the contest off a three-pointer by first year Natalie Royer. The lead would go on to change four times before a 12-point run by Potsdam to own a controlling 30-20 lead heading into the half.

Adams and Arianna Coombs combined for seven points in the first 3:15 of the second half, capped off by a Schuylar Nolan free throw to make it 34-28 (6:37).

The Bears were able to extend their lead by 15 before being halted by a Parker trip to the charity strip to make it 43-29.

Adams owned the last points of the third quarter, successful on a jumper to make it 46-31.

It was all Epler to kick off the final period of play as she strung together seven points in 5:04 to trail 53-38. A six-point run in favor of the bad guys came to an end off a Parker free throw at 3:06 (59-40).

Too little, too late, the Spartans ended on a seven-point run finished by Royer with her second trey of the day with 18 seconds remaining on the game clock.

It was Epler and Adams who led the green's offensive charge, each recording 11 points. The former also went up for nine rebounds (1 offensive, 8 defensive), six rebounds (3 offensive, 3 defensive) for the latter, while they both recorded two assists.

First year Emily Dingmon ended the day with nine rebounds of her own.

The Spartans will return to action on Tuesday, November 19 as they travel to SUNY Cobleskill for a 6 p.m. contest.
