COBLESKILL, N.Y. – The Vermont State University Castleton women's basketball team fell to SUNY Cobleskill on the road Tuesday evening, 78-59.
VTSU Castleton opened the contest with a 4-2 lead on a pair of layups by
Schuylar Nolan and
Arianna Coombs.
Momentum began to shift in favor of hosting Cobleskill in the form of an eight-point run. The swing was halted off a trey by
Stasia Epler with 5:39 remaining on the clock. The Fighting Tigers put up another big run, this time 11-1, to own a 21-8 after the first quarter.
The Spartans were outscored in the middle quarters to trail 61-37.
Castleton put together a solid effort in the final stanza, outscoring Cobleskill 22-17. It improved its field goal percentage to 36.8% in the process.
Rookie
Maggie Parker put up a pair of layups, paired with a layup by
Emily Adams in a 45 second span to cut the lead to 17.
Despite the Spartans' best efforts, the Fighting Tigers were able to extend their lead to 21 before two made free throws by
Luna Perry-St. Peter helped the contest to end 78-59.
It was Parker who led her team on the score sheet, owning a squad-best 12 points, eight rebounds (3-5) and one steal. Also recording 12 points was Epler, who pitched in six rebounds and two steals of her own.
VTSU Castleton returns home on Friday as it kicks off the Spartan Invitational in a 5 p.m. contest with the University of Maine-Farmington.
