CASTLETON, Vt. – The Vermont State University men's soccer claimed a senior day victory over Southern Maine on Friday evening, 2-0.
Despite finding themselves on the defensive end of the field throughout the opening minutes of the contest,
Adolphe Alfani was able to manage a breakaway, finding himself one-on-one with the goalie. The senior was eventually taken down by the Huskies' keeper Aldo Bryant, resulting in a penalty kick.
During the set up for the kick the USM bench was awarded a yellow card for an unruly coach.
It was fellow-senior
Toby Ritzkowski who would take the shot and put his team up 1-0 with 19:14 remaining on the clock.
The two LEC teams took turns trading shots and fouls throughout the second half.
VTSU Castleton was able to add an insurance as
Matt Spiller beat a defender and the goal to make it 2-0 at 12:57.
The best scoring opportunity for the visitors occurred in the closing seconds of the match when Colin Albert was able to send a long free kick on goal, eventually swallowed by the breadbasket of
Xander Berthiaume.
In what was a chippy match, there were six yellow cards handed out, four to the Huskies and one to the Spartans.
Castleton proved to be unmatched offensively, owning an 8-4 advantage in shots on-goal.
Bethiaume, who was named the LEC Rookie and Goalie of the Week, collect four saves during his sixth shutout of the season.
The Spartans now await the results of tomorrow's conference match ups to determine their postseason schedule.
